Rule #216 of living on the mountain: Now is the day to live by faithfulness
It is Sunday morning. The sky is monotone gray. There’s no telling where the sun is behind the clouds, but it does illuminate this entire forested hollow. A calm gurgling sound emanates from the area where the creek must be. Its waters are no longer visible from the cabin porch. Only the dense layers of green can be seen. The little streams that run down the eastern ridge every twenty feet are small and nearly to run dry. Courses that cross the dirt road are turning to quiet puddles. It is almost safe to walk across favorite paths in the meadow. Songbirds cry out in their beautiful clear voices, cutting through the silence here. Small snacks of tangy greens that grow along the road are not sufficient to curb hunger. There is hot tea, eggs and bacon in the cabin.
In the book of Daniel, chapter 11, a heavenly being gave Daniel a lengthy narrative describing the future of Jerusalem and Daniel’s people. He described a future time, which was actually fulfilled when Antiochus Epiphanes took Jerusalem and the temple for Jupiter/Zeus worship. He terrorized the Jews. A small group of people, who were faithful to God, revolted.
“Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will join them in hypocrisy. Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time; because it is still to come at the appointed time.”
While most of the above narrative told of the Maccabees, Jews who fought against suppression of their lifestyle and worship by the Persian king Antiochus Epiphanes. But there is still a haunting statement regarding why this will happen.
It will all happen in order to refine and purge for the appointed time. The Jewish people have faithfully held onto their heritage. They have established feast days and fast days to help them remember the histories of their ancestors. Certain ones continue to this day to keep themselves pure, to preserve their heritage.
The heavenly being dropped a hint that all this is just a shadow of what will happen “at the appointed time”.
Dear reader, many of us today feel the approach of that “appointed time”. May I suggest that those who belong to Jesus – Yeshua the Messiah – examine our hearts for faithfulness. The time is near.
From Habakkuk 2 –
Then the Lord replied:
“Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald may run with it.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come
and will not delay.
“See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness—
indeed, wine betrays him;
he is arrogant and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
and like death is never satisfied,
he gathers to himself all the nations
and takes captive all the peoples.
I am impressed by Holy Spirit to say:
Now is the day to live by faithfulness.
